What is PTSD?

Post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is a response to a distressing or overwhelming experience that has not been fully processed.

Even when the event has passed, your body and mind can continue to respond as if it is still happening.

You might notice

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or distressing dreams
  • Feeling on edge or easily startled
  • Avoiding reminders of what happened
  • Emotional numbness or feeling disconnected
  • Difficulty relaxing or feeling safe

Why this happens

PTSD is not a sign of weakness. It is your nervous system trying to protect you.

When something feels overwhelming, the brain can struggle to process it fully. Instead of becoming part of the past, the experience stays active.

How therapy can help

Trauma therapy, including EMDR, supports your brain to process the experience so it feels like something that happened, rather than something that is still happening.

If you recognise these symptoms in yourself, you can book a 15-minute introductory chat to discuss how trauma-informed therapy may help. I offer face-to-face sessions in Wheelers Hill and Telehealth across Melbourne.

Saturday appointments available.
